Dave Chappelle is undoubtedly one of the most well-known stand-up comedians working in our day. The American comedian, now 48 years old, has gathered an enormous following since he made his first public appearance in the spotlight. On Twitter, many of Dave Chappelle’s admirers shared their appreciation for his monologue on Saturday Night Live. However, despite being relatively successful financially, the comedian has chosen to keep most aspects of his life secret.

It was a location that Yellow Springs had had its eye on for multifamily housing since 1977, and planners worked out a deal with Oberer to upzone part of the property for denser development of townhouses and duplexes in exchange for a park and a plot for affordable housing. But, again, it was a location on which Yellow Springs had focused since 1977. A few locals have made passionate arguments in support of the project, praising it as something that will benefit the people who already live in the town.
However, there were those squeaky wheels that did not enjoy it, and for all the reasons that you would expect. For instance, throughout the last couple of months, the community has heard from a wetland biologist concerned about mosquitoes. One resident of the neighborhood was concerned about the traffic. Concerns about gentrification, overdevelopment and a lack of transparency in the planning process were raised by nearby residents. Max Crome, an architect with a home in the area and a practice in the Bay Area, attended a town meeting in January and pressured the city manager into letting him screen-share a presentation. In the production, he accused the volunteer government of spreading “misinformation.” He combed through historical, black-and-white satellite photos to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that there had been a dump on the property in the 1970s. After that, he continued by asking, “What’s the sense in having duplexes and townhouses if they’re not affordable?” The process has been one of “washing” to make it seem more affordable.

So Crome hired the comedian to create some new projects in town. The inhabitants of the community have an average age of 49 years. Chappelle believes that if the community loses its school, it will never be able to grow beyond the pensioners who have chosen to live there. “Although these shifts are unavoidable, we have some say in their nature and the directions in which they may go. So let’s look at things with more of a creative eye rather than a reactive one since the potential of this location is enormous, and Oberer is not the only possible option.
I could not find a more substantial explanation for Chappelle’s opposition; however, I do not necessarily conclude from his speeches that he is against “affordable housing” per se; instead, I believe that he believes the village can and should stop the entire development in its tracks. This conclusion is based on the fact that I could not find a more substantial explanation for Chappelle’s opposition. We may expect more of the same from here on out. It has been reaffirmed on several occasions by the city planners that Oberer is the landowner. It is permitted to construct six single-family residences on each acre of land. Another choice would be to negotiate a price with the developer to acquire the land, which might be in the tens of millions of dollars.
